Memories of Chinatown Programme Schedule

Chinatown occupies a special place in the hearts of many Singaporeans. After all, it is the stage upon which the destinies of Chinese immigrants to the Nanyang have played out. Its streets, constructed by our forefathers, are present still, and all those who live among them are contributing to a new chapter in Chinatown’s history.

A nation’s memory comprises the images, scenes and memories recorded by its artists and by the public. “Memories of Chinatown” is set in a Chinatown vividly captured and presented in works by painters Chua Mia Tee, Choo Keng Kwang, Ang Ah Tee and photographer Yip Cheong Fun. Against this backdrop are added the voices of old residents, evoking in their stories the people and things of a lost Chinatown.

Even now, the multi-layered history of Chinatown continues to be written. Let this documentary bring us back to the Chinatown of the 20th century, and let us experience the scenes and tales that once permeated these familiar streets.
